This is Taylor Price.
Taylor, tell us more about how you got started.
I could tell you that my corporation was formed in August 2019 and since then it has only been scaling. But that is not the message I’d want to only display. As entrepreneurs, I think your story goes much deeper than business. Your story should be your message and this is mine.
Starting a business is extremely hard work. The mindset and drive you need to put 14, 16, and sometimes 18 hours a day into your business like I have did not just happen for me overnight. It was a long and winding road.
In 2010, when I was in the 4th grade, I was diagnosed with acute scoliosis. At the time, surprisingly it was not much of a concern to us. My parents, who are entrepreneurs themselves, had a business they were focused on. In short, we never really followed up on the condition of my spine. As time passed on, specifically in early 2014, I was experiencing extreme pain, I had trouble breathing, my back hurt, and my heart was palpitating. I decided to take it upon myself to call my doctors and luckily, I was able to get in the next day.
The next day illustrates when my life completely turned around (180 degrees). I knew as soon as my specialist told me that my spine would need major spinal fusion surgery that my life would never be the same again.
The irony of my dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon being shattered by my own neurosurgery on June 23rd, 2014, was hard to accept. I had an 8 hour invasive surgery fusing my vertebra T3-L4 with 2 titanium rods, hooks, screws, and bone grafts. The surgery unveiled a side of me no one ever saw. Being in the ICU for 14 days really takes a toll on you.
My body became septic and no one understood why. Eventually, my doctors diagnosed me with an autoimmune disorder called Lupus, a blood disorder called ITP, thyroid nodules, and umbilical hernia to top it all off. All in 2 years time, I had to relearn to walk, complete physical therapy, undergo two more operations (one for a revision on the spinal fusion surgery; my right rod was not fully fused so they had to cut 4 inches off of the rod, and do a hernia repair surgery).
From 2014-2016 is a time in my life that I truly believe created the person I am today. Those times cemented motivation and determination in my brain. There is nothing that I cant do if I put my mind to it. I realized that life is truly a blessing and sadly it can be taken away from you at any point. So why should I rest when I could be creating something incredible.
Leading all the way up to present day, if I was asked how I got started, I would say its a long story venturing back to 4th grade in elementary school. As Steve Jobs once said, “If you really look closely, most overnight successes took a really long time.”
What has been the most difficult aspect about launching your business?
At such a young age, many people believe I do not have what it takes to start my own company because I am a woman, or let alone be in the world of finance.
As we know, finance is a male dominated field. Not only was I studying finance, but I was also launching a business in the field knowing that women are not as prevalent (yet) in the world of finance. At 19 years of age, I realized the obstacles put in front of me, but I never stopped working hard to achieve my goals.
