MEET JAE CASINO: RAPPER & ARTIST

This is Jae Casino.

Jae, tell us more about how you first got into music.

Honestly, it really started when I was around 13 years old.

I accidentally got placed in my school’s band playing the saxophone and I couldn't get my schedule changed at all.

So I had to just tough it out for the year.

But the longer I stayed, the more I started to learn about music composition and all the things that go into making a song.

I started applying that mindset to music I’d hear on the radio.

This was back in like 2009, so Lil Wayne and T pain were like the biggest artists in the world.

That December, my uncle took me to the “I am Music Tour” and I saw them both in the concert for the first time ever.

I was paying so much attention to the live band and watching them perform and just being so in synch with each other.

I knew I wanted to be a music artist from that point and everything has been history since then.

What would you say separates your sound/style from other artists?

I'm from the 757.

The same area of like Pharrell, Timbaland and the Clipse and all of them.

So, I never really had one style of music influence me.

A lot of people say VA doesn't really have its own sound, but I never really saw that as a bad thing.

We all make unique music, we're not really in a box we have to fit into.

After I started rapping for a while, I got really tired of waiting for producers to get back with me about beats and engineering.

So eventually, I just learned how to do it all myself.

I try to incorporate different instruments and weird little sound bytes that can add flavor to my music other than just the typical 808 snare kick combo.

What has been some of your favorite projects/tracks you've got to work on?

I didn’t start out as a solo artist.

I'm in a group called Peew Gand, with my best friends Grizzly F.O.G and Sunni Rey.

Our first EP called “Purple Flame,” is a personal favorite project of mine.

We started recording when we were living in different parts of VA and ended up moving in together and recording that project in 2018.

As far as my favorite track, I'd say its my song “Jordan River.”

At the time I was going through a really bad time in my life.

I was relying heavily on alcohol and painkillers because I had been in a head on collision with a drunk driver in September of 2018.

My ex-girlfriend and me broke up after she had a miscarriage and in general the whole world felt like it was against me.

I took a few lines from this gospel song called, "every time I feel the spirit moving in my heart I will pray" and flipped it to talk about my situation.

I’m not super religious but the sentiments do get me through from time to time.

Do you have anything new or upcoming we can expect to see from you?

I'm working on my third full length album called “Days As We Speak.”

I’m pushing for a mid-summer release and my groups new album “Purple Flame Redux” is coming out in late 2020.
